15. October 2013 · Comments Off on iPhone 5s vs. iPhone 5c · Categories: Apple, iPhone · Tags: ,

newiphone5For the first time this year, Apple unveiled two new versions of the iPhone at the same time: the top-tier iPhone 5s and the more budget-friendly iPhone 5c. While the devices have much in common, the 5s has several things to offer over the 5c, including a faster processing chip, a better camera, and a 64GB option.

Then again, you might prefer the 5c if you love color and don’t want to break the bank with your new phone purchase. Use the following information to determine which new iPhone is right for you.

  • Capacity – iPhone 5s comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage sizes; iPhone 5c only comes in 16GB and 32GB capacities.
  • Price – New two-year contract pricing for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c is as follows:

16GB: $199 for 5s; $99 for 5c
32GB: $299 for 5s; $199 for 5c
64GB: $399 for 5s

  • Color – iPhone 5s is offered in three different color schemes: gold-on-white, silver-on-white, and “space gray”-on-black. The 5c comes in more bold color options: yellow, green, blue, pink, and white.
  • Construction – The 5s is has a durable aluminum chassis, while the 5c has a plastic shell, surrounding a steel-reinforced frame.gold-black-silver-iphone
  • Chip – iPhone 5s features the powerful A7 chip, which boasts significant speed and graphics processing improvements over the A6 chip that powers the iPhone 5c.
  • Identity Sensor – The 5s has Touch ID, a feature allowing you to access your phone using your fingerprint. The 5c doesn’t have this feature.
  • iSight Camera – Though both cameras are 8MP, the camera on the 5s features several improvements over the 5c camera, including a larger aperture for better low-light photography, True Tone flash for photographing people, Slo-mo video, and Burst Mode photography.

One more thing to note: The iPhone 5c is essentially the same phone as the now discontinued iPhone 5, but with a plastic shell. The 5c does offer a couple small improvements over the 5, including a slightly longer battery life and a marginally better front-facing camera, but for a significant upgrade, iPhone 5 users will have to opt for the 5s.

os&iOS 7: New Features You Should Know About

In September, Apple released the latest version of its iOS operating software for the iPhone and iPad: iOS 7. Like every iOS update, the latest one introduces new features and functionality, and can take a little time to adjust to. If you haven’t updated your device yet or recently updated and want a tour of the latest features, read on to learn about the major changes introduced by iOS 7.

  • New look – The changes made to the iOS’ appearance with the latest update are more drastic than those introduced in any of the past few iOS updates. The revamped look includes colorful, flattened buttons and a new password screen, among other changes.
  • Control Center – This new feature provides easy access to essential settings and utilities. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access the Center, where you can toggle Wi-Fi on and off, adjust screen brightness, and access your alarm clock, turn on the flashlight, and more.
  • Improved Notification Center – Notification Center now includes a “today” section, showing you all of your notifications for the current date.
  • New camera features – Camera includes new photo filters that change the look of your photo with the swipe of a finger. Also, quickly change between shooting formats (still, video, panorama, and square).
  • Easier updates – iOS 7 introduces automatic App updating. App updates are downloaded and installed automatically during power-efficient times, such as when you’re connected to Wi-Fi.
  • Photo sorting – Now sort photos by time, place, year, collection (e.g., “New York trip”), or moment (categories within collections, e.g., “Videos from Empire State Building”).
  • AirDrop – This new feature lets you share pictures, videos, contacts, etc., with someone nearby using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
  • iTunes Radio –This streaming, personalized radio station service is new with iOS 7.
  • Safari improvements – Updates made to the Safari browser include an improved search bar and a new vertical tab view.
  • Improved Siri – Siri is now faster, checks more resources, is easier to understand, and performs more tasks. Siri will now return calls, play voicemails, search Twitter, control the new iTunes Radio feature, and more.
  • Better security – New features make it harder for someone who stole your device to use it. For example, turning off “Find My iPhone” or erasing your device now requires your Apple ID and password.

Don’t forget to back up your device before you update it to iOS 7, and keep in mind that you’ll need at least 3GB of free space to download the update directly (otherwise, you can install it over iTunes).

As a child groTornado Chase Cowwing up in Indiana, one of the common weather occurrences you could always count on was the threat of spring and summer storms brewing up a tornado.  The town sirens would wail and local television and radio stations would blast loud tones and display multi-colored maps of approaching storms.

Once, a small tornado caused some damage to mailboxes and the sidewalk in front of our house. Several years later, a tornado picked up our dog house from the back yard and dropped it off in the front yard while causing major damage to houses across the street. Some close calls!

Today, however, with advances in satellite, radar and warning systems, we are warned hours – if not days – in advance of a possible threat of a major storm. In turn, this has created a group of daring individuals called “Storm Chasers” who literally “chase” storms in hopes of capturing live video coverage of wind, lightning, tornados and storm damage. Other amateur storm chasers need only to be armed with a smart phone or a palm-sized camera to capture any storms in their neighborhood.

In 1996, the movie “Twister” was released starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton as part of a team of storm chasers researching tornados.

Real-life storm chasers were the basis for our latest iOS game, a storm chaser app called “Tornado Chase Severe Weather Adventure”.  This app allows players to become storm chasers shooting videos of tornados, while avoiding obstacles and lightning along the way. Watch out for the flying cow!

Tornados are also referred to as twisters or cyclones and come in many sizes and shapes. Most tornados have wind speeds of less than 110 miles per hour and, usually, travel only a few miles before dissipating. Some tornados, although rare, have reached higher speeds and have stretched more than two miles wide. Tornados have been observed on every continent except Antarctica.

clown games

Found my Circus Button!

The only trip my family made to the circus was when I was 8 years old.  It was a classic Barnum and Bailey event and somewhere in the office junk drawer there is a very bright pink button to prove attendance.  Burned to memory and still vivid to this day were the elephants, the ringmaster, the multiple clowns and the music.  As a child, clowns were not scary to me.  I always thought it was fun to be able to dress up, put on face paint in order to be completely anonymous and then be socially “allowed” to do any crazy thing you wanted to do because you were a clown!

As we set about building our Wrong Way Sam circus game, we wanted to bring some replica music of a real circus and the look and feel of vintage toys in a circus setting that would appeal to any culture.  We spent a lot of time on the animation build with our “toys” that Sam picks up during this game play: the pinwheel, the spinning block, several types of balloons.  Several of the death objects are also animated.  Our favorite is probably the bumper car with the crazy driver.  Just as in real life, you don’t die right away if you hit the bumper car, but we will keep it a mystery on how many times you can hit the crazy bumper car guy and still live to finish this clown game!

This “Wrong Way Sam” game has been fun for us to play as designers because it starts out slow, but eventually goes breathtakingly fast once you pick up a couple of power ups or an extra life which will speed you through.  Be careful coming out of the power up as you can usually get slammed by the police car or the ice cream cart.  If you can live long enough, do listen to all of the music on the entire game loop – it is circus fun to the max and we never get tired of listening to it or playing this Wrong Way Sam game.  We hope you enjoy it too.

15. August 2013 · Comments Off on Fishing Is One of Our Favorite Past Times · Categories: Mountain Woods Media · Tags:

FISHERMANFishing is one of our favorite past times and we don’t get to do it enough.

Ever since I was a child, fishing was part of growing up in Indiana (almost as big as Hoosier Hysteria). Bluegill, bass and catfish were usually the catch of the day by using a variety of baits and artificial lures. Of course, there was always a fish tale to share of the big one that got away. The big ones always seem to get away!

A few years ago, long road trips to Arkansas for a few days of trout fishing turned into an annual Spring event. A road sign there advertised for everyone to “Quit Wishing. Go Fishing” and that “Taking A Client Fishing Was Good Business.”

Therefore, fishing became the inspiration for our latest game “The Trout Family Fish and Swim Adventure.” It’s probably the closest thing to actually sitting on the bank of a quiet pond or stream waiting to catch the big one.

The “Trout Family” is a simple “swimming and jumping” fishing game. Here, you can choose between four different trout characters (blue, brown, rainbow and purple) and jump from one waterfall platform to the next. Players earn points by collecting different types of fishing baits, including worms, flies and crickets. “Kiss” the pink trout for bonus points.

Of course, along the way, players need to avoid fishermen, hooks and rock obstacles; things that trout don’t like in nature while swimming upstream.

There are no additional charges for selecting different trout characters, but players can opt for Kids Mode and can Turn Off Ads. Game Center integration is also available with this game.

“The Trout Family Fish and Swim Adventure” is available in 21 languages/countries.

We hope you’ll enjoy playing this game, which is currently free to download for iPad and iPhone in the App Store.
